The Sanskrit edition of the Yoga-vasistha including English translation and grammatical analysis. The Yogavasistha is a Hindu spiritual text written by Valmiki (who also authored the Ramayana) dealing with the philosophical topics from the Advaita-vedanta school. Chronologically it precedes the Ramayana.

Verse 7.79.25

मदशक्त्यात्मनि ज्ञाने दृष्टा देशान्तरेषु या ।
प्रसृतानां पिशाचादिदेहता सा न सिध्यति ॥ २५ ॥

madaśaktyātmani jñāne dṛṣṭā deśāntareṣu yā |
prasṛtānāṃ piśācādidehatā sā na sidhyati || 25 ||

If you say the human spirit to liken the spirit of liquors, (which is generated in and destroyed with the liquor); then tell me what makes the destroyed or departed spirit of [a] deceased person, who is dead in a foreign country, revisit his friends at home in the shape and form of a fiend (pisacha)?
