The Sanskrit edition of the Yoga-vasistha including English translation and grammatical analysis. The Yogavasistha is a Hindu spiritual text written by Valmiki (who also authored the Ramayana) dealing with the philosophical topics from the Advaita-vedanta school. Chronologically it precedes the Ramayana.

Verse 6.96.43

प्रेक्षितं यत्तु नास्त्येव प्रेक्षाप्रश्नेन तत्र किम् ।
संनिवेशं विना सत्ता यथा हेम्नो न विद्यते ॥ ४३ ॥

prekṣitaṃ yattu nāstyeva prekṣāpraśnena tatra kim |
saṃniveśaṃ vinā sattā yathā hemno na vidyate || 43 ||

It is vain to ask about an appearance, which being looked into vanishes into nothing; as it is in vain to speak of the essence of gold, when it presents us no figure of it.
