विषाद-विस्मयादौ लाटानुप्रासेऽर्थान्तर-सङ्क्रमित-वाच्ये विहितानुवादे च कथित-पदत्वं गुणः. क्रमेणोदाहरणम्. हन्त हन्त गतः कान्तो वसन्ते सखि नागतः. अत्र विषादः. चित्रं चित्रम् अनाकाशे पश्य सुन्दरि चन्द्रमाः. अत्र विस्मयः. एवम् अन्यच् च बोध्यम्. सुनेत्रे नेत्रे यत् क्षिपसि मयि तत् तेऽतिकरुणा. अत्र लाटानुप्रासः. पार्षदाः पार्षदा यस्येत्य्-आदाव् अर्थान्तर-सङ्क्रमित-वाच्यः. उदेति सविता ताम्रः इत्य्-आदौ विहितानुवादः.
viṣāda-vismayādau lāṭānuprāse'rthāntara-saṅkramita-vācye vihitānuvāde ca kathita-padatvaṃ guṇaḥ. krameṇodāharaṇam. hanta hanta gataḥ kānto vasante sakhi nāgataḥ. atra viṣādaḥ. citraṃ citram anākāśe paśya sundari candramāḥ. atra vismayaḥ. evam anyac ca bodhyam. sunetre netre yat kṣipasi mayi tat te'tikaruṇā. atra lāṭānuprāsaḥ. pārṣadāḥ pārṣadā yasyety-ādāv arthāntara-saṅkramita-vācyaḥ. udeti savitā tāmraḥ ity-ādau vihitānuvādaḥ.
The fault called kathita-pada (repeated word) (7.60) is a quality either when there is despondency, when there is amazement, and so on, when there is lāṭa anuprāsa, when the literal meaning transforms to another sense (arthāntara-saṅkramita-vācya), or when there is a reiteration of something that was stated. Examples are shown in order.
This is a repetition in despondency: hanta hanta gataḥ kānto vasante sakhi nāgataḥ, “Alas, alas, sakhī, it is springtime and my sweetheart has not arrived” (Sāhitya-darpaṇa 7.23).
This is a repetition in amazement: citraṃ citram anākāśe paśya sundari candramāḥ, “Ho, ho, beautiful girl, look at the moon which is not in the sky” (Sāhitya-darpaṇa 7.23). Other instances can be inferred in like manner.
This is a repetition in lāṭa anuprāsa (9.13): sunetre netre yat kṣipasi mayi tat te’tikaruṇā, “Girl with beautiful eyes, that you cast your eyes on me is your great mercy.”
This is a repetition in arthāntara-saṅkramita-vācya (the literal meaning transforms to another sense): pārṣadāḥ pārṣadā yasya, “The Lord’s entourage is an entourage,” and so forth (4.82).
This is a reiteration of something that was stated: udeti savitā tāmras tāmra evāstam eti ca, “The sun rises red, and red it sets” (7.76).
