Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

अष्टावक्र उवाच ।
दशा दशोक्ताः पुरुषस्य लोके सहस्रमाहुर्दश पूर्णं शतानि ।
दशैव मासान्बिभ्रति गर्भवत्यो दशेरका दश दाशा दशार्णाः ॥ १६ ॥
