Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. षोडशस्त्रीसहस्राणि वासुदेवपरिग्रहः ।
न्यमज्जन्त सरस्वत्यां कालेन जनमेजय ।
ताश्चाप्यप्सरसो भूत्वा वासुदेवमुपागमन् ॥ २१ ॥

ṣoḍaśastrīsahasrāṇi vāsudevaparigrahaḥ |
nyamajjanta sarasvatyāṃ kālena janamejaya |
tāścāpyapsaraso bhūtvā vāsudevamupāgaman || 21 ||
