Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. नष्टादित्ये तथा लोके तमोभूते नगात्मजे ।
तृतीयं लोचनं दीप्तं सृष्टं ते रक्षता प्रजाः ॥ ४४ ॥

naṣṭāditye tathā loke tamobhūte nagātmaje |
tṛtīyaṃ locanaṃ dīptaṃ sṛṣṭaṃ te rakṣatā prajāḥ || 44 ||
