śumāra (शुमार).—m ( P) This form, although etymologically more correct than, is not so common as, the form sumāra.

sumāra (सुमार).—m n ( P) Number, numerical amount. Of this sense, although the proper sense, the use is restricted. It occurs in such examples as the following when the number is to be stated of things mentioned; and only in accounts, notes, or other writings: (ex. āmbē su0 śambhara, rupayē su0 tīna, gaḍī su0 pañcavīsa:) and in applications involving the idea of absence of number, i. e. of excessiveness, immoderateness, incalculableness. Ex. tyācē ēthēṃ pāhuṇē kitī paḍatāta tyācā kāṃhīṃ su0 nāhīṃ; vihi- rīlā pāṇyācā su0 ca nāhīṃ; kitī agaṇita sainya hō vīrāñcā kāṃhīṃ su0 tarīṃ; hā samudraca āhē hyācē guṇāñcā kōṇhīṃ su0 lāvalā āhē? 2 A conjectural estimation or estimate; a rough calculation or computation: also indistinct or approximating apprehension or judgment of; conjecture or guess. v pāha, kāḍha, kara, bāndha, & yē, disa, hō. 3 Moderateness, the middling or mean quality. Ex. hā sumārānēṃ bōlatō- cālatō -khātō -pitō -lihitō -vācatō -&c.; hā sumā- rācā bōlaṇārā -cālaṇārā -mūrkha -śāhaṇā -vēḍā -mhātārā -kṛpaṇa -dātā -hiravā -pivaḷā -phāṭakā -mōḍakā- -&c. 4 Nearness, approximation, aboutness, the relation of closeness or resemblance:--with application to time, space, objects or forms, and properies. Ex. kāla dupāracē sumārāsa pāūsa paḍalā; pūrṇimēcē sumārā- vara tumhī yā; cāḷaśīcē sumārāsa phārakarūna dṛṣṭi manda hōtī; tyā jhāḍācē sumārāsa mājhēṃ ghara āhē; sēba mhaṇūna phaḷa āmbyācē sumārāvara āhē; hā tumacā mulagā mājhē mulagyācē sumārācā āhē; hā manuṣya kēvaḷa kāḷā nāhīṃ kōḷaśācē sumārācā kāḷā āhē. Further, the word is extensively applied, and with several slight diversifications of the general sense of Boundedness, definiteness, compass, determinate range &c.; and, thence, of Reasonableness, congruousness, connectedness, the relation of appropriateness, adaptedness, adequateness, or answerableness; and the applications, although various, are not licentious or lax. The following few instances should be studied:--hē āmbē āṭhā divasānta kujāyācē sumārāsa yētīla (Range or sphere of the action or state Rotting); hā ghōḍā vasakaṇēcē sumārāsa ālā (Range); hī kēḷa pasavāyācē sumārāsa ālīsēṃ disatēṃ (Range); hā gōsāvī kathēsa ubhā rāhilā mhaṇajē su0 nāhīṃ asēṃ bōlaṇēṃ bōlatō (Definiteness. There's no end to his stories and similies); lōka bhalabhalatēṃ sāṅgatāta tēṃ aikūṃ nayē āpalā āpaṇa su0 pāhūna karāvēṃ (Compass; sphere or range of capability, powers, resources, means); hā kharca karūṃ lāgalā mhaṇajē hyālā su0 rāhata nāhīṃ (Congruousness; the co-aptations or correlations of matters, and their requirements in consequence, as discerned or as inhering in them); ēvaḍhā vēḷa bhalabhalatēṃ bōlata hōtā parantu ātāṃ sumārā- vara ālā, or hyācē bhāṣaṇācā ajhuna kāṃhīṃ su0 sama- jata nāhīṃ, or hyālā bōlatānā su0 rāhata nāhīṃ or su0 jātō &c. (Coherency; consistency, connectedness, just correspondence or relation); hā mulagā paḍhatō kharā paṇa paḍhaṇyāvara hyācā su0 nāhīṃ, or tū mhaṇatōsa kharā para viśēṣaṇaviśēṣyāvara su0 ṭhēvīta jā (Advertence; aiming or attending mind; the mind as bearing uponand contemplating the connections of). Note. Several of these applications, it will be seen, bear a sense allied, more or less closely, to the senses more condensely expressed under Nos. 3 &4. sumārācā Moderate, middling; that may be accounted to be of the quality or degree specified, but of which positive and determinate declaration cannot be made. Ex. hēṃ sōnēṃ kāṃhīṃ cāṅgalēṃ mhaṇā- yācēṃ navhē sumārācēṃ āhē; bhāta sumārācā śijalā mhaṇajē khālīṃ utarāvā maga āpāpa puratā śijatō.
