by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 96.18

सर्वे अशरणा स्कन्धा अधितप्ता महद्भया ।
अनिःसृता असारा च इति भाषति गौतमो ॥ १८ ॥

sarve aśaraṇā skandhā adhitaptā mahadbhayā |
aniḥsṛtā asārā ca iti bhāṣati gautamo || 18 ||

“There is no safety in the skandhas, but torment and great fear. There is no freedom in them: they are worthless.” This does Gotama declare. (18)
