Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 8.14

दिवसकरसदृशतेजश् चाभासो विकसते दिशः सर्वाः ।
यदा पुरुषसिंहताये आद्यप्रणिधिः समुद्भवति ॥ १४ ॥

divasakarasadṛśatejaś cābhāso vikasate diśaḥ sarvāḥ |
yadā puruṣasiṃhatāye ādyapraṇidhiḥ samudbhavati || 14 ||

A radiant splendour like that of the star of day is shed over all the regions of space, when a vow is first made to win the qualities of the lion-man. (14)
