Kavyamimamsa of Rajasekhara (Study)

This page relates ‘Rajashekhara’s association with Gujarata (Gujarat)’ of the study on the Kavyamimamsa of Rajasekhara: a poetical encyclopedia from the 9th century dealing with the ancient Indian science of poetics and rhetoric (also know as alankara-shastra). The Kavya-mimamsa is written in eighteen chapters representing an educational framework for the poet (kavi) and instructs him in the science of applied poetics for the sake of making literature and poetry (kavya).

Part 9 - Rājaśekhara’s association with Gujarāta (Gujarat)

In the works of Rājaśekhara seems very much connect with Gujarāta [Gujarat] (Lāṭadeśa) through his royal patron. In the play Karpūramañjarī, the heroine is the daughter of Gujarāta (Lāṭadeśa). In the Viddhaśālabhañjikā also connected to the king of this country.

In the Bālarāmāyaṇa when he describes this province he says it as the crest of the world. C.f.

ayamasāvito viśvambharāśiraḥśekhara iva lāṭadeśaḥ |”

yadyoniḥ kila saṃskṛtasya sudṛśāṃ jihvasu yanmodate
  yatra śrotrapathāvatāriṇi kaṭu rbhāṣākṣarāṇāṃ rasaḥ
|
gaptaṃ cūrṇapadaṃ padaṃ ratipatestatprākṛtaṃ yadvaca —
  stāṃllāṭāṃllalitāṅgi paśya sudatī dṛṣṭornimeṣavratam
|| ”

In the Kāvyamīmāṃsā he says about the elegance of speech and beauty of Gujrata (Lāṭadeśa) as:

paṭhanti laṭabhaṃ lāṭāḥ prākṛtaṃ saṃskṛtadviṣaḥ |
jihvayā lalitollāpalabdhasaundaryamudrāyā
|| ”

Therefore, in the Bālarāmāyaṇa he describes that:

paśyasyagre jaladhiparikhaṃ maṇḍalaṃ siṃhālānāṃ
  citrottaṃsaṃ maṇimayabhuvā rohaṇenācalena |
dūrvākāṇḍacchaviṣu caturaṃ maṇḍanaṃ yadvadhūmāṃ
  gātreṣvambho bhavati gamitaṃ ratnatāṃ śuktigarbhaiḥ
|| ”

And also,

janaśca vāksudhāsūtirmaṇisūtiśca rohaṇaḥ |
nānyatra siṃhaladvīpānmuktāsūtiśca sāgaraḥ
|| ”
