The Sanskrit edition of the Yoga-vasistha including English translation and grammatical analysis. Chronologically it precedes the Ramayana.

Verse 5.92.35

अङ्कुशेन विना मत्तं यथा दुष्टं मतङ्गजम् ।
अध्यात्मविद्याधिगमः साधुसङ्गम एव च ॥ ३५ ॥

aṅkuśena vinā mattaṃ yathā duṣṭaṃ mataṅgajam |
adhyātmavidyādhigamaḥ sādhusaṅgama eva ca || 35 ||

As it is impossible to restrain the infuriate elephant without its goading; so it is not possible for you to curb your indomitable mind, without the help of spiritual knowledge, and association with the wise and good.
