Chronologically it precedes the Ramayana.

अत्र ज्ञानमनुष्ठानं नत्वन्यदुपयुज्यते ।
मृगतृष्णाजलभ्रान्तिशान्तौ चेदं निरूपितम् ॥ २ ॥

atra jñānamanuṣṭhānaṃ natvanyadupayujyate |
mṛgatṛṣṇājalabhrāntiśāntau cedaṃ nirūpitam || 2 ||

Here nothing else is needed than the culture and practice of divine knowledge, and thereby the truth being known, one views the errors of the world, as a satiate traveller looks at a mirage in a clear light.
