Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

यथा श्वा भषितुं चैव हन्तुं चैवावसृज्यते ।
एवं संभाषणार्थाय सर्वशास्त्रवधाय च ।
अल्पश्रुताः कुतर्काश्च दृष्टाः स्पृष्टाः कुपण्डिताः ॥ १५ ॥

yathā śvā bhaṣituṃ caiva hantuṃ caivāvasṛjyate |
evaṃ saṃbhāṣaṇārthāya sarvaśāstravadhāya ca |
alpaśrutāḥ kutarkāśca dṛṣṭāḥ spṛṣṭāḥ kupaṇḍitāḥ || 15 ||
