Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
धर्माः पितामहेनोक्ता मोक्षधर्माश्रिताः शुभाः ।
धर्ममाश्रमिणां श्रेष्ठं वक्तुमर्हति मे भवान् ॥ १ ॥

dharmāḥ pitāmahenoktā mokṣadharmāśritāḥ śubhāḥ |
dharmamāśramiṇāṃ śreṣṭhaṃ vaktumarhati me bhavān || 1 ||
