बङ्गेषु मङ्गलो नाम
गोप आसीन् महा-मनाः
लक्ष्मिवान् छ्रुत-सम्पन्नो
नव-लक्ष-गवां पतिः
baṅgeṣu maṅgalo nāma
gopa āsīn mahā-manāḥ
lakṣmivān chruta-sampanno
nava-lakṣa-gavāṃ patiḥ
baṅgeṣu—in east Bengal; maṅgalaḥ—Maṅgala; nāma—named; gopa—gopa; āsīn—was; mahā-manāḥ—noble-hearted; lakṣmivān—wealthy; śruta-sampannaḥ—learned; nava-lakṣa-gavam—of nine-hundred thousand cows; patiḥ—the master.
English translation of verse 4.2.2:
In east Bengal lived a noble-hearted, learned, and wealthy gopa named Maṅgala.
He was the master of nine-hundred-thousand cows.
