भार्याः पञ्च सहस्राणि
बभूवुस् तस्य मैथिल
कदाचिद् दैव-योगेन
धनं सर्वं क्षयं गतम्

bhāryāḥ pañca sahasrāṇi
babhūvus tasya maithila
kadācid daiva-yogena
dhanaṃ sarvaṃ kṣayaṃ gatam

bhāryāḥwives; pañca sahasrāṇi—five thousand; babhūvuḥ—were; tasya—of him; maithilaO king of Mithilā; kadācit—at a certain time; daiva-yogena—by destiny; dhanam—wealth; sarvam—all; kṣayam—to destruction; gatam—went.

English translation of verse 4.2.3:

O king of Mithilā, he had five thousand wives. One day all his wealth was destroyed by fate.
