納步 [nà bù] [na bu]—
留步 [liu bu] (liúbù). It refers to a humble expression used by a guest who is leaving, to decline the host's escort. From Yuan (元 [yuan]) Dynasty author 陶宗儀 [tao zong yi] (Táo Zōngyí)'s 《南村輟耕錄 [nan cun chuo geng lu]》 (Náncūn Chuògēnglù), Volume 5 (卷五 [juan wu]), "Humility of Previous Generations" (先輩謙讓 [xian bei qian rang]): When Mr. 徐永之 [xu yong zhi] (Xú Yǒngzhī) was the Jiangzhe Supervisor (江浙提舉 [jiang zhe ti ju]), whenever guests visited him, regardless of intimacy or distance, noble or humble (無間親疏貴賤 [wu jian qin shu gui jian]), he would always escort them outside the gate (必送之於門外 [bi song zhi yu men wai]). If a guest asked him to stay (請 [qing]), he would say: "No (不可 [bu ke])."
