This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 78.16

नागवर मा कृशो भव प्रतीच्छ भक्तं पिबाहि पानीयं ।
अभिरामयिष्यामि इध पुरोत्तमे खु शोचिष्ठाः ॥ १६ ॥

nāgavara mā kṛśo bhava pratīccha bhaktaṃ pibāhi pānīyaṃ |
abhirāmayiṣyāmi idha purottame khu śociṣṭhāḥ || 16 ||

“Fair elephant,” said he, “do not become lean, but accept this food and drink this water. I would have you to be happy in this fairest of all cities. So be not aggrieved.” The best of elephants replied, (16)
