Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 33.15

न्यग्रोधम् एव सेवेया न विशाखम् अभिप्रार्थयेत् ।
न्यग्रोधस्मिं मृतं श्रेयो न विशाखम् अस्मिं जीवितं ॥ १५ ॥

nyagrodham eva seveyā na viśākham abhiprārthayet |
nyagrodhasmiṃ mṛtaṃ śreyo na viśākham asmiṃ jīvitaṃ || 15 ||

Men should follow Nyagrodha and not seek Vishakha. It is better to die with Nyagrodha than live with Vishakha. (15)
