Later Traditions

Later traditions, both Buddhist and Brahmanical, also contain accounts of the Vatsas and the last Paurava king, the famous Udayana. Rarely has a royal tradition dominated literature for so many centuries as the story of Udayana. His life and romance have provided material for the Pali Udenavattu, the Sanskrit Makandika-vadana, Meghaduta, Kathasaritsagara, Svapna-Vasavadatta, Pratijna Yaugandharayana, Ratnavali and Priyadarsika, as also the Brahma-khanda of the Skanda-Purana, Jaina Vividhatirtha-kalpa, Lalitavistara and Tibetan Buddhist literature. According to the combined evidence of this extensive literature, as also of the Pali Pickets, the two central threads in Buddhistic tradition relating to Kaushambi were: (t) king Udayana and (n) Buddha and his religion.
