The Sanskrit edition of the Yoga-vasistha including English translation and grammatical analysis. The Yogavasistha is a Hindu spiritual text written by Valmiki (who also authored the Ramayana) dealing with the philosophical topics from the Advaita-vedanta school. Chronologically it precedes the Ramayana.

अहंभावनमेवोच्चैर्बीजं दुःखाख्यशाल्मलेः ।
ममेदं तद्वदादीति शाखाप्रसरकारणम् ॥ ८ ॥

ahaṃbhāvanamevoccairbījaṃ duḥkhākhyaśālmaleḥ |
mamedaṃ tadvadādīti śākhāprasarakāraṇam || 8 ||

Egoism is verily the seed of all worldly misery, as the seed of the thorny simul tree grows only prickles on earth; so is meity or the thought that this is mine, the out stretching branch of this tree.
