The Sanskrit edition of the Yoga-vasistha including English translation and grammatical analysis. The Yogavasistha is a Hindu spiritual text written by Valmiki (who also authored the Ramayana) dealing with the philosophical topics from the Advaita-vedanta school. Chronologically it precedes the Ramayana.

सर्वेषामेव जन्तूनां संविद्धृदयमुच्यते ।
न देहावयवैकांशो जडजीर्णोपलोपमः ॥ ३७ ॥

sarveṣāmeva jantūnāṃ saṃviddhṛdayamucyate |
na dehāvayavaikāṃśo jaḍajīrṇopalopamaḥ || 37 ||

The consciousness of all living creatures, is also called their heart; though it is no part of the animal body, nor is a dull inert substance as a pebble or stone.
