The Sanskrit edition of the Yoga-vasistha including English translation and grammatical analysis. The Yogavasistha is a Hindu spiritual text written by Valmiki (who also authored the Ramayana) dealing with the philosophical topics from the Advaita-vedanta school. Chronologically it precedes the Ramayana.

Verse 5.2.21

भोगास्त्यक्तुं न शक्यन्ते तत्त्यागेन विना वयम् ।
प्रभवामो न विपदामहो संकटमागतम् ॥ २१ ॥

bhogāstyaktuṃ na śakyante tattyāgena vinā vayam |
prabhavāmo na vipadāmaho saṃkaṭamāgatam || 21 ||

It is as hard to shun our appetites on the one hand, as it is impossible to avoid our troubles here, without the utter annihilation of our appetency. Here is the difficulty in both ways.
