Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

वैशंपायन उवाच ।
सा कीर्तयन्ती दुःखानि भीमसेनस्य भामिनी ।
रुरोद शनकैः कृष्णा भीमसेनमुदीक्षती ॥ २६ ॥

sā kīrtayantī duḥkhāni bhīmasenasya bhāminī |
ruroda śanakaiḥ kṛṣṇā bhīmasenamudīkṣatī || 26 ||
