The commentators, however, say that the taddhita affixes तम (tama) and इष्ठ (iṣṭha),like all the taddhita affixes showing case-relations, are applied without any specific sense of themselves, the affixes showing the sense of the base itself (स्वार्थे (svārthe)); e. g गुरुतमः, गरिष्ठः (gurutamaḥ, gariṣṭhaḥ); पटुतमः, पठिष्ठः (paṭutamaḥ, paṭhiṣṭhaḥ); पचतितमाम्, कर्तृतमः, करिष्ठः (pacatitamām, kartṛtamaḥ, kariṣṭhaḥ) etc.; cf. P.V.3.55-64 The affixes ईयस् (īyas) and इष्ठ (iṣṭha) are applied only to such substantives which denote quality; cf. P.V.3.58.
Vyakarana (व्याकरण, vyākaraṇa) refers to Sanskrit grammar and represents one of the six additional sciences (vedanga) to be studied along with the Vedas. Vyakarana concerns itself with the rules of Sanskrit grammar and linguistic analysis in order to establish the correct context of words and sentences.
