Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 85.3

कृतपुण्या हि वर्धन्ति न्यग्रोधा विय सुभूमियं जाता ।
अनुपन्थके विय द्रुमा अल्पपुण्या विहीना त्ति ॥ ३ ॥

kṛtapuṇyā hi vardhanti nyagrodhā viya subhūmiyaṃ jātā |
anupanthake viya drumā alpapuṇyā vihīnā tti || 3 ||

The righteous grow like the banyan tree in fertile soil, but the unrighteous wither like trees growing in the roadway. (3)
