Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 12.37

पंचाशं च अभूषि वर्षसहस्राणि आयुःपरिमाणं ।
मनुजान एवं न विमति कार्या तत्रोपदेशस्मिं ॥ ३७ ॥

paṃcāśaṃ ca abhūṣi varṣasahasrāṇi āyuḥparimāṇaṃ |
manujāna evaṃ na vimati kāryā tatropadeśasmiṃ || 37 ||

The span of man’s life was then fifty-thousand years, and thus there was no occasion for doubt as to what was then taught. (37)
