This page describes the characteristics of the vaimanika deva which is verse 4.20 of the English translation of the Tattvartha Sutra which represents the essentials of Jainism and Jain dharma and deals with the basics on Karma, Cosmology, Ethics, Celestial beings and Liberation. The Tattvarthasutra is authorative among both Digambara and Shvetambara. This is verse 20 of the chapter The Celestial Beings and includes an extensive commentary.

Verse 4.20 - The characteristics of the Vaimānika deva

Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration and English translation of Tattvartha sūtra 4.20:

स्थितिप्रभावसुखद्युतिलेश्याविशुद्धीन्द्रियावधि विषयतोऽधिकाः ॥ ४.२० ॥

sthitiprabhāvasukhadyutileśyāviśuddhīndriyāvadhi viṣayato'dhikāḥ || 4.20 ||

There is increase in lifetime (sthiti), influence (prabhāva), happiness (sukha), brilliance (dyuti), purity of thought-colouration (leśyāviśuddhi), capacity of the senses (indriyaviṣaya), and range of clairvoyance (avadhiviṣaya) in the deva of higher kalpa. (20)

Hindi Anvayarth:

अन्वयार्थ: आयु, प्रभाव, सुख, द्युति, लेश्या की विशुद्धि, इन्द्रियों का विषय और अवधिज्ञान का विषय-ये सब ऊपर-ऊपर के विमानों में (वैमानिक देवों के) अधिक हैं।

Anvayartha: ayu, prabhava, sukha, dyuti, leshya ki vishuddhi, indriyom ka vishaya aura avadhijnana ka vishaya-ye saba upara-upara ke vimanom mem (vaimanika devom ke) adhika haim |

Explanation in English from Ācārya Pūjyapāda’s Sarvārthasiddhi:

The next sūtra describes the differences in the characteristics of the vaimānika deva.

Owing to the fruition of the life-karma (āyuḥkarma) acquired, the soul’s association with the body in a particular birth is called the lifetime (āyuḥ). Capacity to inflict pain or confer benefits to others is the influence (prabhāva). Enjoyment of sensuous pleasures is happiness (sukha). The splendour of the body, the dress and the ornaments constitute brilliance (dyuti). The thought-colouration (leśyā) has already been explained (see explanation to sūtra 1-8, p. 18). The purity of thought-colouration is leśyāviśuddhi. The capacity and scope of the senses is indriyaviṣaya and the capacity and scope of the clairvoyance is avadhiviṣaya. The vaimānika deva higher and higher up are superior in regard to all these ascpects.
