Historical Elements in the Matsya Purana

This page relates ‘Dynasty of Maurya’ of the study on the historical elements of the Matsya-purana: one of the eighteen Mahapuranas which are Sanskrit texts that have preserved the cultural heritage, philosophy, religion, geography, etc of ancient India. This Matsyapurana was originally written in 20,000 verses and deals with topics such as architecture, ancient history, polity, religion and philosophy.

Subsequently there were eight sons like Sukalpa etc. in the dynasty of Mahāpadma. The eight ruled for only twelve years respectively. After twelve years Kautilya had overthrown the sons of Mahāpadma. Then after ruling for a hundred years, this state went under the authority of the Mauryan dynasty. After this his son was Śatadhanvā who ruled for six years. After that his son Bṛhadratha ruled for seventy years. Thereafter Śaka remain the king for thirty-six years. After Śaka, his grandson ruled for seventy years. His son became the king Daśaratha who ruled for eight years. Then his son ruled for nineteen years. These ten Mauryan dynasty’s kings ruled the earth for one hundred thirty-seven years. Subsequently this kingdom passed on the Śunga dynasty. At that time Śungavaṃśī commander Puṣyamitra destroyed the kings of Bṛhadratha dynasty and became king himself and ruled for thirty-six years.[1]
