Historical Elements in the Matsya Purana

This page relates ‘Dynasty of Shudra’ of the study on the historical elements of the Matsya-purana: one of the eighteen Mahapuranas which are Sanskrit texts that have preserved the cultural heritage, philosophy, religion, geography, etc of ancient India. This Matsyapurana was originally written in 20,000 verses and deals with topics such as architecture, ancient history, polity, religion and philosophy.

Thereafter, for forty-three years Mahānandī became the king. Ten kings were born in the same dynasty after Śiśunāga. In this way, for three hundred and sixty year Śiśunāga dynasty’s king ruled their kingdoms. They all were lower class Kṣatriyas . Mahānandi’s son Mahāpadma was born from Śudrā’s womb as part of Kaliyuga . This king was the destroyer of entire Kṣatriyas. Since then people was born from Śudrā’s womb, became kings. Mahāpadma was the unchallenged emperor, who consumed the earth for eighty-eight years.[1]
