The Vaisheshika-sutra 2.2.27, English translation, including commentaries such as the Upaskara of Shankara Mishra, the Vivriti of Jayanarayana-Tarkapanchanana and the Bhashya of Chandrakanta. The Vaisheshika Sutras teaches the science freedom (moksha-shastra) and the various aspects of the soul (eg., it's nature, suffering and rebirth under the law of karma). This is sutra 7 (‘above continued’) contained in Chapter 2—Of the Five Bhutas, Time, and Space—of Book II (of substances).

Sūtra 2.2.27 (Above continued)

Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration, Word-for-word and English translation of Vaiśeṣika sūtra 2.2.27:

नित्यवैधर्म्यात् ॥ २.२.२७ ॥

nityavaidharmyāt || 2.2.27 ||

nitya-vaiadharmyāt—owing to difference in property from what is eternal.

27. (Sound is not something which only requires to be brought to light), because it differs in property from what is-eternal.

Commentary: The Upaskāra of Śaṅkara Miśra:

(English rendering of Śaṅkara Miśra’s commentary called Upaskāra from the 15th century)

He says that for this reason also, it (Sound) is not something which only requires to be made known:

[Read sūtra 2.2.27 above]

The difference of Sound from what is eternal, is observed. Whereas, as in “Caitra speaks,” the existence of Caitra, Maitra, etc., even though they are covered from view, may be inferred from their voice; and whereas that which reveals, e.g., the lap, etc., is never inferred by that which is revealed, e.g.. the water-pot, etc.; therefore Sound is only a product, and not something which requires to be brought to light. This is the sense.—27.
