The Ramayana was written in roughly 24,000 Sanskrit metrical verses spanning seven books or Kandas (Adi or Bala-kanda, Ayodhya-kanda, Aranya-kanda, Kishkindhya-kanda, Sundara-kanda, Lanka-kanda and Uttara-kanda)

Other titles include: Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa (वाल्मीकि रामायण) or Vālmīkirāmāyaṇa (वाल्मीकिरामायण)
