दृष्टान्तः पुनर् एतेषां सर्वेषां प्रतिबिम्बनम् ॥ १०.१०२cd ॥

dṛṣṭāntaḥ punar eteṣāṃ sarveṣāṃ pratibimbanam || 10.102cd ||

dṛṣṭa-antaḥ—the ornament called dṛṣṭānta; punaḥ—moreover; eteṣām sarveṣām—of all these; pratibimbanam—a mirrored reflection.

When there is a mirrored effect of all of them, that is dṛṣṭānta (exemplification).

sarveṣāṃ dharmāṇāṃ pratibimba-vad bhāsanaṃ dṛṣṭāntaḥ. sa ca sādharmyeṇa vaidharmyeṇa ceti dvedhā.

Dṛṣṭānta is a mirror-like reflection of all the aspects. Dṛṣṭānta has two varieties: sādharmya (similarity of attribute) and vaidharmya (contrast of attribute).

Commentary:

The term dṛṣṭānta literally means: dṛṣṭo’nto niścayo yatra sa dṛṣṭāntaḥ, “that in which the conclusion is seen” (Kāvya-prakāśa 10.102 vṛtti). The sādharmya variety of dṛṣṭānta culminates in an implied simile.[1]
