Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. षड्भागपरिशुद्धं च कृषेर्भागमुपार्जितम् ।
वैश्यो ददद्द्विजातिभ्यः पापेभ्यः परिमुच्यते ॥ १६ ॥

ṣaḍbhāgapariśuddhaṃ ca kṛṣerbhāgamupārjitam |
vaiśyo dadaddvijātibhyaḥ pāpebhyaḥ parimucyate || 16 ||
