सीतां तत्याज राजेन्द्रो
वने लोकापवादतः
अहो सताम् अपि भुवि
भवनं भूरि-दुःख-दम्
sītāṃ tatyāja rājendro
vane lokāpavādataḥ
aho satām api bhuvi
bhavanaṃ bhūri-duḥkha-dam
sītām—Sītā; tatyāja—renouncing; rāja—of kings; indraḥ—the king; vane—in the forest; loka—of the people; apavādataḥ—because of the criticism; ahaḥ—ah; satām—of the saintly devotees; api—also; bhuvi—in the world; bhavanam—manifestation; bhūri—great; duḥkha—pain; dam—giving.
English translation of verse 1.4.60:
Then, because of the criticism of the ordinary people, Rāma, the king of kings, abandoned Sītā in the forest. Ah, this brought great pain to the saintly devotees in the world.
