This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

अपि खण्डकपालेन भिक्षयतो कुलात्कुलं ।
स्वजनेन सहवासो न तु एतादृशं दुःखं ॥ ८८ ॥

api khaṇḍakapālena bhikṣayato kulātkulaṃ |
svajanena sahavāso na tu etādṛśaṃ duḥkhaṃ || 88 ||

“So long as one lives with one’s own people, begging round the houses with a potsherd for an almsbowl is better than this misery. (88)
