by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 13.12

अनागता अतिक्रान्ता संबुद्धा ये च सांप्रतं ।
कृतेन बुद्धधर्मेण निर्वायन्ति नरोत्तमा इति ॥ १२ ॥

anāgatā atikrāntā saṃbuddhā ye ca sāṃprataṃ |
kṛtena buddhadharmeṇa nirvāyanti narottamā iti || 12 ||

The Buddhas, supreme of men, whether of the future, or of the past, or of the present, only pass away when they have fulfilled their Buddhahood. (12)
