by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 13.11

न जातु सावशेषेषु बुद्धधर्मेषु श्रुय्यते ।
निर्वृताः पुरुषश्रेष्ठा अतीताध्वे जिनात्मजा ॥ ११ ॥

na jātu sāvaśeṣeṣu buddhadharmeṣu śruyyate |
nirvṛtāḥ puruṣaśreṣṭhā atītādhve jinātmajā || 11 ||

No one has ever heard that the Best of Men, sons of the Conqueror, have in times gone by passed away with their Buddha-tasks undone. (11)
