Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 9.17

कामैः ते नावकीर्यन्ते बुद्धत्वे कृतनिश्चयाः ।
तेनानिवर्तियास् तेषाम् अध्याशया इति स्मृताः ॥ १७ ॥

kāmaiḥ te nāvakīryante buddhatve kṛtaniścayāḥ |
tenānivartiyās teṣām adhyāśayā iti smṛtāḥ || 17 ||

Having made a resolve to win Buddha-hood, they are not distracted from it by indulgence in pleasures of sense. Thus are their dispositions said to be resolute. (17)
