Chapter 1 - Introduction

Glory of Upaniṣads lies in the ultimate victory of humanity. Human society moves forward on the strength of ethical awareness. Swami Vivekananda laid stress on man-making education which is the focal theme of Upaniṣadic teaching. Proper education is a pre requisite for emergence of a compact and disciplined society and for integrated human development. A society of enlightened citizens is the dream of the Upaniṣads. Upaniṣadic teaching visualises a society where there is no hatred among the people. The sage utters ''mā vidviṣāvahai''.

Sages also provide inspiration for development of mind strong enough to meet all worldly challenges. The secret of happiness of a society lies in having people who are of one mind. Upaniṣads may be considered as a book of social sensibility which can bring to our generation a unique vision of peace and harmony.

Upaniṣad is a treasure house of spiritual insights which it is worthwhile to meditate upon. The greatness of Upaniṣad is realized only when one strives to attain the core of life, the Self, the Brahman.

The question may arise as to how important and relevant is the message of Upaniṣads in the present day society. One who is conversant in Upaniṣadic teachings can claim that the Upaniṣads are relevant in todays life as are the Sun, the Moon, the Stars, the air and the earth. The question of relevance is in fact redundant. The great principles of humanity, human life in all its aspects, its sole nature and ultimate goal is the basis of the message of Upaniṣads. In the world of rising violence and increasing restlessness teachings of Upaniṣads are becoming increasingly relevant. Self realization involving perfect control over senses and mind has to be the ultimate goal of life.

The supreme value of Upaniṣads lies in its lesson of harmony. In a situation which is bound to be dismal and depressing, universal and dynamic vision of Upaniṣads provides the only note of hope for present and future.

The message of Upaniṣads has profound impact on human relationship. The universal Upaniṣadic vision has the potential to play a significant role in the development of humanity. The human mind would benefit greatly by delving deep in the beauty of ocean of Upaniṣads wherein lie the great gems of harmony. The human soul derives sustenance from the message of hope and assurance provided by the Upaniṣads. Upaniṣads imbibe a complete philosophy of life that promises integrated human development involving the fullest experience of love and compassion and enrichment of qualitative point of view.
