This page relates ‘Medicinal Efficacy of Aushadhis’ of the study on the Jivanandana (in English) which is a dramatic play written by Anadaraya Makhin in the 18th century. The Jivanandana praises the excellence of Advaita Vedanta, Ayurveda (medical science) and Dramatic literature as the triple agency for obtaining everlasting bliss.

Drawing information from Vedic texts, vv.30-31 of Act III bring out the importance of auṣadhis in curing diseases. The Śrutis (Yajurveda, 12.89)[1] say that those herbal plants that bring out fruits, and those that do not do so, those that flower and those that do not–have been enlisted by the Prajāpati, as curative of various diseases.

Again the Śrutivākya (Yajurveda, 12.96)[2] declares that Candra, Lord of auṣadhis has blessed them saying that to whomsoever these herbal plants are offered, they would be rid of their diseases:

phalinyaḥ phalahīnā yāḥ puṣpiṇyo yā āpuṣpikāḥ |
guruprasūtāstā muṣcaṃtvahmaso na iti śrutiḥ ||
yasmai dadāsi taṃ rugbhyaḥ sarvābhyaḥ pārayāmahe |
iti somenauṣadhayaḥ saṃvadantīti ca śrutiḥ ||
