Historical Elements in the Matsya Purana

This page relates ‘Lineages of Atri’ of the study on the historical elements of the Matsya-purana: one of the eighteen Mahapuranas which are Sanskrit texts that have preserved the cultural heritage, philosophy, religion, geography, etc of ancient India. This Matsyapurana was originally written in 20,000 verses and deals with topics such as architecture, ancient history, polity, religion and philosophy.

Uddālaki, Śauṇakarṇiratha, Śoukratava, Gauragrīva, Gourajina, Caitrāyana, Ardhapanya, Vāmarathy, Gopana, Astaki, Bindu, Karṇajihva, Harapriti, Laidrāṇi, Sākalāyani, Tailapa, Savaileya, Atri, Goṇipati, Jalada, Bhagapāda, Saupuṣṇi and Chandogeya these sages were belonging to family in Śārāyaṇa in branch of Kardamāyana. They all were in the Pravara of Śyāvāśva, Atri and Ārcanānasa. They could not marriage each other in same Pravara . Dākṣi, Bali, Parṇavi, Ūrṇunābhi, Śilārdani, Bījavāpi, Śirīśa, Mauñjakeśa, Gaviṣṭhira and Bhalandana these Ṛṣi were in Atri, Gabiṣṭhira and Pūrvātithi Pravara . They also were prohibited to marriage each other. Atreyī was the daughter of Atri. There were also some Pravarakarta who were born from Atreyī. Kāleya, Vāleya, Vāmrathya, Dhātreya and Maitreya were the Pravarakarta who were born from Atreyī. Their Pravara were Atri, Vāmarathya and Poutri. They were also prohibited to marriage each other.[1]
