अकार्य-मित्रम् ईशानं स्मरन् कृष्णं भजामृतम्। अत्र कार्यं विनैव मित्रम् इति विवक्षितम्। अकार्येषु कुकर्मसु मित्रम् इति विरुद्धां धियं जनयति। एवं भवानी-पतिः प्रियतमः इत्य्-आदिकम् अपि पत्य्-आद्य्-अन्तर-धी-जननाद् दुष्टम् एव।

akārya-mitram īśānaṃ smaran kṛṣṇaṃ bhajāmṛtam. atra kāryaṃ vinaiva mitram iti vivakṣitam. akāryeṣu kukarmasu mitram iti viruddhāṃ dhiyaṃ janayati. evaṃ bhavānī-patiḥ priyatamaḥ ity-ādikam api paty-ādy-antara-dhī-jananād duṣṭam eva.

(16) This is an example of viruddha-mati-kṛt (it causes a contradictory thought): akārya-mitram īśānaṃ smaran kṛṣṇaṃ bhajāmṛtam, “Remembering the Lord, a friend who does not have to be made a friend, serve Kṛṣṇa, the nectar.”

Here, what is intended to be said with akārya-mitram is this: “a friend who does not have to be made such.” However, that compound brings about a contradictory thought: “partner in crime.”

Similarly, the words bhavānī-pati (Śiva) (lit. the husband of Śiva’s wife), priyatama (the dearest lover), and so on are faulty because they generate the perception of someone other than the husband and so forth.
