Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

प्रवृष्टे च यथा देवे सम्यक्क्षेत्रे च कर्षिते ।
बीजं महागुणं भूयात्तथा सिद्धिर्हि मानुषी ॥ ७ ॥

pravṛṣṭe ca yathā deve samyakkṣetre ca karṣite |
bījaṃ mahāguṇaṃ bhūyāttathā siddhirhi mānuṣī || 7 ||
