Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

श्रुतर्वा विरथो राजन्नाददे खड्गचर्मणी ।
अथास्याददतः खड्गं शतचन्द्रं च भानुमत् ।
क्षुरप्रेण शिरः कायात्पातयामास पाण्डवः ॥ २७ ॥

śrutarvā viratho rājannādade khaḍgacarmaṇī |
athāsyādadataḥ khaḍgaṃ śatacandraṃ ca bhānumat |
kṣurapreṇa śiraḥ kāyātpātayāmāsa pāṇḍavaḥ || 27 ||
