The Garga-samhita Verse 2.8.12, English translation, including word-by-word: This text represents a Vaishnava scripture which narrates the life Krishna, It was composed in seventeen cantos by Garga Muni: an ancient sage and priest of the Yadu dynasty having. This is verse 2 of Chapter 8 (Description of Seeing Lord Krishna) of Canto 2 (vrindavana-khanda).

वत्स-पाल-मिषेनापि
स्वात्मानं ह्य् आत्मना हरेः
पालितो वत्सरश् चैको
बभूव व्रज-मण्डले

vatsa-pāla-miṣenāpi
svātmānaṃ hy ātmanā hareḥ
pālito vatsaraś caiko
babhūva vraja-maṇḍale

vatsa-pālaof being gopa boys; miṣena—on the preText; api—also; svātmānam—Himself; hi—indeed; ātmanā—Himself; hareḥ—of Lord Kṛṣṇa; pālitaḥ—protected; vatsaraḥ—year; ca—and; ekaḥ—one; babhūva—was; vraja-maṇḍale—in the circle of Vraja.

English translation of verse 2.8.12:

In the circle of Vraja one year passed with Kṛṣṇa disguising Himself as both the calves and gopas. He was the calves and He was the gopas protecting the calves.
