< Back to all galleries

These photos were taken at the Tissamaharama Raja Maha Vihara situated in Sri Lanka, which includes a large Stupa that can be seen from afar. The whole complex is an ancient Buddhist temple which can be dated to the 3rd century BC. According to Theravada traditions, the site was visited by the historical Buddha who meditated at the place together with 500 Arhats (one who has achieved spiritual enlightenment). The stupa found at the Tissamaharama Vihara is one of the largest in Sri Lanka. Besides this complex, the village also contains several other ancient Buddhist monuments.

The Tissamaharama Chaitya is said to house the sacred Left Tooth Relic and the forehead Bone Relic of the Buddha.
