Source: Wisdom Library: Āyurveda and botanyVaruṇādi (वरुणादि) is the Sanskrit name for a group of medicinal plants, classified as being efficacious in cases of cephalacgia, gulma and internal abscesses, etc. It was originally composed by Suśruta in his Suśrutasaṃhitā sūtrasthāna XXXVIII, a classic work on Āyurveda. The name is derived from the words Varuṇa (Crataeva nurvala) and ādi, translating to “first” or “commencement”. Examples of plants pertaining to this category include Varuṇa, Pūtika, Agnimantha, Vāsuka, Bilva, Ajaśṛṅgī and Darbha. The collection of herbs named Varuṇādi is but one of the thirty-seven gaṇas (‘sections’) of such groups.
