Maat was connected to the entire existence of the universe, and was not limited to ethics for human beings alone. Understanding how the world functioned and how it had been created, although variously presented within the different orientations of Ancient Egyptian religion, was vital to understanding maat. Maat was the perfect order toward which humans should strive.
In terms of a deity, there was a female personification of the phenomenon of Maat. In this form, she was thought of as Re's daughter. There were cults exculusively dedicated to Maat, the goddess.
She is the goddess of truth, justice and balance. She is the wife and sister of Thoth the god of writing, khowledge, magic, scribes and wisdom. In the weighing of the heart ceremony when the deceased's heart is weighed agenst the fearther of Maat. During the ceremony Thoth stands by to recored the anser on a sheet of Papyius. She can be depicted as a women standing with an ostrich feather in her hair or as a lady nealing with an ostrich feather on her head but the most common way that she is shown is as a lady nealing with outstreched wings and an ostrich feather on her head.
