This page relates ‘Savitri (the Healer)’ of the study on the Vedic influence of Sun-worship in the Puranas, conducted by Goswami Mitali in 2018. The tradition of observing Agnihotra sacrifice and the Sandhya, etc., is frequently observed among the Hindus. Another important innovation of the Sun-worship in the Puranas is the installation of the images of the Sun in the temples.—This section belongs to the series “Salient Traits of the Solar Divinities in the Veda”.

In the Vedas, Savitṛ is mentioned as the healer of mental and physical disorder. He removes the evil dreams.[1]

In his interpretation on the respective passage Sāyaṇācārya directs the meaning of the term duṣvapnya as:

duḥṣvapnyaṃ duḥsvapnaṃ duḥsvapnavadduḥkhakaraṃ dāridryam/165

He drives away the evil spirits and sorcerers.[2] Savitṛ stands as the remover of diseases.[3] He is worshipped to make men sinless.[4]
